PEER partners participate in European topic centre on climate change adaptation

05 July 2010, Climate Change, PEER

PEER scientists take part in a new European Topic Centre on climate change adaptation. The new topic centre will provide support to the European Environment Agency (EEA) and its monitoring network, Eionet. This can be seen as the most recent result of a common PEER initiative on climate change adaptation launched in 2007.

The objective of the topic centre is to gradually gather and integrate all available knowledge on climate adaptation, thereby reducing the current fragmented nature of information. In addition, the topic centre will focus on harmonization of monitoring systems related to climate change impacts, vulnerability and disaster risks. The topic centre will also cooperate and network with member countries not only with regard to status reports but also with regard to climate adaptation strategies. The topic centre has 10 participating institutions from 9 countries and is headed by Sergio Castellari from the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change, CMCC, in Bologna. The topic centre relates primarily to the PEER network and CIRCLE2 network.

PEER is in charge of 3 of the centre’s 5 work areas, namely work area 2, "Indicators and mapping" (SYKE), work area 3, "Support the development and implementation of EU policy" (NERI) and work area 4, "EEA assessment reports" (Alterra). UFZ also participates in the new topic centre.

Henrik Sandbech, PEER chair and Director General of NERI, who will be in charge of Work Area 3, is pleased that the EU now supports the project.

"The PEER joint programme on climate change helped build a strong common PEER climate change research group. In 2009 it resulted in two well-received and often cited reports on European climate change adaptation policies and strategy. This has proven to be a strong platform for taking on more common research and advisory tasks in the area of climate change adaptation. We are looking forward to working more closely with the commission and the EEA through the topic centre, and to help promote sound, knowledge-based European policies in the area of climate change adaptation."

The topic centre is allocated a total of EUR 700,000 during a 4-year period, but this amount may increase during the course of the project.
